Clinical Associate Professor Wong Hon Tym is the Medical Director of Singapore’s National Healthcare Group Eye Institute, and a Senior Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology, Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). In 2015, he was appointed Clinical Director of the upcoming Centre for Healthcare Innovation, where he will co-develop a thought leadership platform focused on healthcare workforce transformation.

A/Prof Wong obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and his Masters Degree in Medicine in 1999. He was awarded the Ministry of Health Manpower Development Programme scholarship in 2002, whereupon he underwent a clinical fellowship in glaucoma at Moorfields Eye Hospital, UK. His research, covering topics such as glaucoma surgery and anterior segment imaging, has been published in major peer-reviewed journals.

A/Prof Wong served as Head of the Department of Ophthalmology in TTSH from 2007 – 2016. During his tenure, the department doubled in strength to over 30 consultants, and achieved significant milestones in research, training and primary eye care.

He is a member of the hospital’s Clinical Board, and from 2008-2015 he was also Clinical Director of NHG 1-Health, a community-based ambulatory surgery centre, where he led the re-design and streamlining of cataract surgery into a value-added process.

A/Prof Wong plays an active role in the training and education of junior ophthalmologists in Singapore and has garnered multiple Best Teacher Awards. He has been mentor to clinical fellows in glaucoma, and has been a course instructor at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting, the World Glaucoma Congress and the European Glaucoma Society Congress.

His efforts in quality patient care were recognized with a national Excellent Service Star Award in 2006 and his appointments as a hospital Critical Incident Manager and Open Communication instructor reflects his commitment to patient communication. He is also a volunteer Board Director for the Guide Dogs Association for the Blind.

For his contributions to eye care, A/Prof Wong was bestowed a Distinguished Service Award at the Eye and Vision Health Awards in 2013, and then the National Healthcare Group Outstanding Citizenship Award in 2014.
