Professor Pillunat, M.D., Ph.D., FEBO is currently the chairman of the University Eye Hospital in Dresden and president of the german Initiative for early detection of glaucoma.
He graduated from medical school at the Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf. In 1987 he finished the residency in ophthalmology at the University of Ulm, in 1988 he finished the Ph.D. thesis and became faculty member at the University of Ulm. 1992 he was elected Vice-Chairman at the University Eye Hospital Ulm. 1993-1995 he served as a visiting professor and glaucoma research fellow at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, USA. In 1996 he received the vice-chairman position, full professorship in Ophthalmology and head of glaucoma service and anterior segment surgery at the University Eye Hospital Hamburg. 2001 he received the Chairman position in Ophthalmology at the University Eye Hospital in Dresden.
His special interests are focused on the pathophysiology of glaucoma damage, glaucoma surgery and pharmacology in glaucoma. He serves as a reviewer for many peer reviewed journals, published more than 160 peer reviewed articles and 6 books.
Beside other awards he received the National Chibret award, the honorary membership of the Italian glaucoma society and the Merkle-Award from Ulm University.
