Assoc Prof Shamira Perera qualified from University of London, with a BSc(hons) First Class (1994) and MBBS(hons) in 1997. Following 2 fellowships he came to Singapore in 2008.
In 2015, whilst Co head of Bioengineering and Devices at SERI, he formed part of a group that won a national engineering award IES- Prestigious Engineering award, and in 2017 an award for innovation: AHIP-GEM Award. He was conferred the AAO and APAO achievement awards in 2015 and 2016 respectively in recognition of his research and clinical work. One of his passions is teaching and in conjunction with Touch Surgery (www.touchsurgery.com) he co-authored a Golden Apple award winning, free app module to teach and test cataract surgery. Supported by competitive research grants totalling over S$1.5M, his core work has yielded 8 patents. A/Prof Perera has been an invited lecturer for over 90 conferences, written 5 book chapters and >110 peer reviewed publications. His role as the Deputy Director of the MedTech Office, to promote commercialisation across all specialties at SingHealth includes him presiding over grant awarding bodies aimed at innovation which disburse over $5M per year.
